1. Compare and contrast racial conflict in the South and the West. Aﬅer the Civil War Racism and slavery were supposedly over and America was on the road of equality. Both the Southern and Western parts of America did not really see it that way in the late Nineteenth century. The West contended with Nave Americans while the South was sll set in their ways of racism towards blacks. The one thing that was the same in the South and in the West was that all races where not created equal. The west wanted nothing to do with Nave Americans except to take their land and amongst other things. In the South blacks where no longer slaves but they were handicapped by state laws such as the Black Codes. Both areas of the Naon had their separate bales with race but, one thing they had in common was that they were wrong. With the Naon as a whole looking to expand westward in search of more land and there chance of even more freedom it caused a great deal of disrupon in the lives of the Nave Americans. Things like the lumber that stood on the land that was sll owned by the Naves and the thoughts of building railroads. Would give the Americans that where moving west the Idea that it was okay to take over their land at all costs without thing that they were equal. In the south once the Civil War was over Blacks were created equal in the north however, in the south former slave owners sll felt that blacks were not equal. During the Western Movement former farm hand became ranchers or even cowboys. Moving large amounts of livestock west caused many conﬂicts with the Naves. Not only did the cowboys not worry about whose land they were on but, they would allow their cale to feed on ranges and diminish the food for the Naves cale. The cowboys would even take cale, goods, and land if need be. All of this was because the Naves were not looked at as an equal race. The Southerners went from living the dream before the Civil War by having slaves work for them and they could reap all the beneﬁts. However they quickly realized they needed a way to sll get free labor. When the Black Codes where enacted they would take black children and place them in a so called internship so that they would not have to pay them and once they were trained and smart enough to ask for payment they would be dropped and the cycle would connue. Blacks had such strict regulaons on owning land that it was almost impossible to be self-suﬃcient and not rely on the white man. The diﬀerences in my eyes were tremendous in terms of comparing the west to the south in terms of racial conﬂicts. The naves where losing everything and had done nothing for it to happen. In terms of the south the blacks were sll being treated poorly but overme that changed and they began their climb to equality. The Nave Americans were here before us and more or less we stole from them compared to the blacks which were sold by their own people to come here and be slaves. With all of this said the racial conﬂicts in the south and west are the same in that people were treated unfairly. Works Cited
