Student Answer:
BP was positioned as a top, world-wide, respected, and best Oil
exploration company. To maintain this positioning BP would have
complied with the International code of ethics. In addition, the existence
of such a code would have supported BP business interests as well.
However, if there were an international code of ethics then BP might have
taken necessary steps to comply with the code of ethics because other
manufacturers were also governed by the code. According to Marianne
Jennings the business system is an economic system endorsed by the
society that allows risk takers, employees, and customers to allocate
scarce resources to competing ends. If the same society had set up an
international code of ethics then a respected and company like BP would
have been compelled to adhere to the code. According to Marianne
Jennings there is an interdependence of trust, business, and government,
and an international code of ethics would have embodied the relationship
of trust, business and government.
