worth 50 marks. Your answers must be well
organized and easy to follow to receive the most possible marks. You may use prose, point
form, tables, or any other combination of formats that clearly presents your ideas. Take
sufficient time to plan your answers; clarity and conciseness are valued.
Question 1: Practice maturity (50 marks)
Compare and contrast Wattpad (presented by Andrew Chak) and Medtronic (presented by
Gerard Torenvliet and Klaus Christofferson) with respect to:
The
current maturity level
of their user-experience/human-factors practice;
Your advice for the appropriate
target maturity level
of their user-experience/human-
factors practice; and
Your recommendations for the next steps each organization should take to move
towards the target state you suggest for them.
Consider information that the presenters explicitly provided in those lectures, as well as
inferences you can draw about their organizations and the context of the industries in which
those organizations operate. Be sure to provide rationale for your assessment and
recommendations, and state any assumptions you make.
Structure your responses as below, according to the 5 pillars of maturity, and with an overall
appraisal.
A) Standards (10 marks)
Current maturity level of Wattpád vs Medtronic (4 marks)
Target maturity level of Wattpad vs Medtronic (4 marks)
Recommended next steps for each (2 marks)
B) Methodology (10 marks)
Current maturity level of Wattpad vs Medtronic (4 marks)
Target maturity level of Wattpad vs Medtronic (4 marks)
Recommended next steps for each (2 marks)
C) Training and support (6 marks)

QZ. Response to RFP (50 marks)
HealthTeck, a medical devices product developer, recently released a patient-controlled
analgesic (PCA) pump. A PCA pump allows patients to self-administer pain medication through
an intravenous infusion directly into their bloodstream, by pushing a button attached to their
bed. These pumps are used in hospital settings, for patients experiencing acute pain. PCA
pumps are supposed to be set up and monitored by nurses.
Unfortunately, shortly after the pump was released in hospitals across North America,
complaints have been flowing into the HealthTeck help-desk call centre. Apparently, nurses are
having trouble setting up the pumps; even after training they're not quite sure what to do, and
they find the display and the controls confusing. And patients are reported to be unhappy with
the pain management. They're often unsure when a bolus (dose) of the pain medication has
been administered, and how long they have to wait until they can take more of it. The result is
that patients are calling the nurses into the hospital rooms with frequency, taking time away
from the many other duties the nurses have. And word is that some patients are still in a lot of
pain, while others seem to be sleeping more than expected.
So far the PCA pumps haven't been recalled, but HealthTeck is worried that this might seriously
impact their reputation, and they'd like to get on top of it.
To that end, HealthTeck has issued a request for proposal (RFP), requesting proposals from
human factors firms for research and design services, to better understand what's going on,
and then redesign the pump and related processes to improve safety, patient experience, and
nurse experience. HealthTeck would like the selected firm to address the following:
Why are nurses confused in the administration of the pump?
Are patients safe? Are they staying within the prescribed doses of pain medication?
What do they think of the pain management experience?
