Spinal Cord and Autonomic Nervous
System
1.
Be able to draw and label the diagram of the enre CNS, including labeling
the direcon impulses are sent for each system and division of the CNS.
a.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
i. Impulses:
send and receive impulses from PNS
ii. Structure:
brain and spinal cord
iii. Funcon:
integrave and control centers
b.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
i. Impulses:
send to motor (efferent) and receive from sensory
(afferent)
ii. Structure:
cranial and spinal nerves
iii. Funcon:
communicaon lines between the CNS and the rest
of the body
iv.
2 DIVISIONS:
1.
Sensory (afferent) division
a. Impulses:
receives from ANS and sends to PNS
b. Structure:
somac and visceral sensory nerve
fibers
c. Funcon:
conducts impulses from receptors to the
CNS
2.
Motor (efferent) division
a.
Impulses:
receives from PNS and sends to somac
& autonomic NS
b.
Structure:
motor nerve fibers
c.
Funcon:
conducts impulses from the CNS to
effectors (muscles and glands)
d.
2 DIVISIONS:
i.
Somac nervous system
1.
Impulses:
receives from motor and
produces voluntary movement of
skeletal muscles
2.
Structure:
somac motor (voluntary)
3.
Funcon:
conducts impulses from the
CNS to skeletal muscles
ii.
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)

Page 2
1.
Impulses:
sends to sympathec &
parasympathec as well as sensory
(afferent) aka back up to CNS and
receives from motor (efferent)
2.
Structure:
visceral motor
(involuntary)
3.
Funcon
: conducts impulses from the
CNS to cardiac muscles, smooth
muscles, and glands
4.
2 DIVISIONS:
a.
Sympathec division
i. Impulses:
receives from
ANS and mobilizes body
systems
ii. Funcon:
mobilizes body
systems during “fight or
flight”
b.
Parasympathec division
i. Impulses
: receives from
ANS and helps
funconing at rest
ii. Funcon:
conserves
energy AND promotes
“housekeeping”
funcons during rest
2.
Describe the basic anatomy of the spinal cord: the meninges and all that
goes with them
a.
Spinal cord is divided into 4 major regions:
i. Cervical
1.
Cervical enlargement
ii. Thoracic
1.
Dura and arachnoid mater
2.
Lumbar enlargement
iii. Lumbar
1.
Conus medullaris
2.
Cauda equina
iv.
Sacral spinal nerves

Filum terminale
b.
Spinal cord anatomy:
i.
Located within the vertebral column
1.
Extends from the foramen magnum to L2
ii.
A 2-way conducon center, sending messages to and from the
brain
iii.
Major reflex center
iv.
Membrane descripons:
1.
Fissure
= a normal groove or furrow, as in the liver or
brain, that divides an organ into lobes or parts
2.
Sulcus
= a deep, narrow furrow or groove, as in an organ
or ssue
3.
Medulla oblongata
= helps regulate breathing, heart
and blood vessel funcon, digeson, sneezing, and
swallowing
4.
Pedicles
= stem-like structure
5.
Denculate ligament
= stabilizes the spinal cord within
the vertebral canal
6.
Posterior median sulcus
= small groove in the back of
the spinal cord
7.
Anterior median fissure
= much larger than posterior
median sulcus
v.
Membrane anatomy:
1.
From outside to inside: dura mater > arachnoid mater >
pia mater
a.
Dura mater
= outermost layer that forms a rough
protecve coang
i.
Surrounds and supports the dural sinuses
and carries blood from the brain toward the
heart
b.
Epidural space
= between the dura mater and the
surrounding bone of the vertebrae
i.
Fat and veins fill space between bony
vertebrae and meninges act as padding
(epidural space)
c.
Arachnoid mater
= middle protecve layer, ssue
has a spiderweb-like appearance
