Topic 2 DQ 1: What are the processes and steps of digestion from mouth to large intestine? What
are some of the disorders that can occur to that digestive process?
The first step that happens when eating food is it entering through the mouth. When you chew,
your teeth break down the food and your saliva from your salivary glands then begin to break
down those foods so that you can digest the food easily. The food than is swallowed and goes
through the esophagus to the stomach. There are muscles that keep your food from coming back
up are called the pharynx. From there, there are muscles that move like waves and help move the
food from the top to the bottom. When the food in the stomach is ready to be digested, the
pyloric sphincter relaxes, allowing food to move through the small intestine. The sphincter only
allows for a small amount of liquefied food to pass through with then the muscles contract and
take in nutrients from the food. After that the rest is than released. There are a couple disorders
that can occur to that digestive process and one of them is gingivitis which can be caused by not
brushing your teeth. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum. Just by watching what you eat as far
as sugar can help keep your mother healthier and in better shape.
Topic 2 DQ 2: What are some decisions to be made when determining the types of carbohydrates
to be selected for a sensible diet? What factors are used in making these decisions?
Carbohydrates are found in a wide array of both healthy and unhealthy foods – bread, beans,
milk, and cherry pie. Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet. Healthy sources of
carbohydrates are unprocessed or minimally processed whole grains, vegetables, fruits and
beans. These types of carbohydrates deliver vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of important
phytonutrients. Unhealthy sources of carbohydrates include white bread, pastries, sodas, and
other highly processed or refined foods. When determining what types of carbohydrates to select

for a sensible diet would be to determine if the carbohydrates should be selected for a sensible
diet would be if they are processed or not and the amount of sugar. For example, a healthy
carbohydrate would be a fruit and an unhealthy carbohydrate would be soda.
