Micro RNA (miRNA)
Regulate the translation of ½ life of mRNA
18N in length
RNA polymerizes in a 5’ to 3’ direction using a 3’ to 5’ template.
4.
Predict the RNA sequence given and DNA template strand of DNA non-
template strand. Or conversely, predict the DNA template strand or non-
template strand given an intronless mRNA sequence.

5.
Discuss the conversation of pre-ribosomal RNA into function ribosomal RNA,
and be able to discuss the conversion of heterogeneous nuclear RNA (pre-
messenger RNA) into functional messenger RNA. Define intron, exon, RNA
processing, splicosome, U1-U6 snRNA, consensuses sequences, branch point
sequence, and alternate RNA processing.
6.
Be able to discuss the detailed structure of a functional messenger RNA and
the possible role of each region.
7.
Be able to discuss the process of translation and what evens are occurring
during each of the stages initiation, elongation, translocation, and
termination. Discuss the role of the different major regions of the ribosomes
(A, P, and E site) and how they function in the translation process.
8.
Define initiation codon, termination codon, reading frame, nonsense
mutation, charged and uncharged transfer RNA, and release factor.
9.
Be able to predict the polypeptide sequence if given a unique messenger
sequence and relate polarity of the polypeptide to that of the RNA and DNA.
10. Be able to briefly discuss the possible use of alternate mRNA initiation
codons, alternate reading frames, and different polypeptides arising from a
single mRNA.
